The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for: Greater Lake Tahoe * TIMING...In effect from 7 AM SUNDAY until noon MONDAY. * AFFECTED AREA...Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass(Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area. * AVALANCHE DANGER...Periods of HIGH avalanche danger may occur from Sunday morning through Monday morning. * REASON/IMPACTS...Forecast heavy snow and high wind may result in widespread avalanche activity in the mountains. * PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche conditions may occur. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended during HIGH avalanche danger. Large destructive avalanches could occur.     * What...A late season winter storm this weekend will bring travel disruptions in the Sierra, aviation impacts, and recreational hazards. Snow will begin in the Sierra by midday and may continue through Monday Morning. Some light showers are possible across western Nevada today with a period of rain and snow Sunday into early Monday. * Snow...Snow may have a difficult time accumulating on roads below 7000 feet in the Sierra today. Travel conditions will turn difficult tonight and Sunday as heavy snow moves into Sierra. Some snow is possible for western Nevada, which may lead to some travel impacts Sunday evening into Monday morning near and above 5000 feet. Light snow may accumulate on some valley floors early Monday morning. Please refer to the latest Winter Storm Watch for details on snow accumulations. * Winds...The strongest winds across western NV and eastern CA are likely on Saturday with gusts up to 50 mph in the lower elevations. Sierra ridges could gust as high as 90 mph. Be prepared for travel restrictions for high profile vehicles along Highways 95, 395 and Interstate 580. Turbulence and low level wind shear will impact flights in and out of the region this weekend.

    ...A High Impact Late Season Winter Storm will bring Mountain Travel Impacts Today into Early Next Week... .A pair of Pacific systems are set to arrive this weekend bringing significant late season snowfall to the mountains. The initial storm arriving today will bring periods of snow to areas between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Expected amounts will range from 6 to 12 inches ahead of a stronger system set to drop heavier snowfall on Sunday. An additional 1 to 2 feet of snow is expected leading to periods of mountain travel impacts. For those who must travel, expect chain controls, possible road closures, snow- covered roads, poor visibility, and significant travel delays. Snow showers continue into Monday with snow levels lowering down to 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Storm total snow amounts will likely range from 1 to 3 feet, locally over 4 feet possible. * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Travel will be very difficult to impossible. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet, with localized amounts up to 4 feet, are expected. * WHERE...Eastern Shasta County, Western Plumas County/Lassen Park, and West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada. * WHEN...11 AM today to 11 AM Monday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Be prepared for significant reductions in visibility at times, chain controls, and possible road closures.

Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges. * WHERE...Greater Lake Tahoe Area. * WHEN...From 2 PM Saturday to noon PDT Monday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult with very long delays possible over Interstate 80, Highway 50, and 88. The heaviest snow is forecast to occur Sunday. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel in the Sierra is strongly discouraged this weekend. Stay home, be safe.
